CTO2NE at European Researchers’ Night 2024: Making Science Accessible for a Greener Future

The European Researchers’ Night 2024 was a celebration of science, curiosity, and community—and CSTO2NE was proud to be part of it! Hosted at the University of Lleida and streamed online, the event gathered over 120 participants, creating a dynamic space where science met society.

This annual EU-wide event aims to showcase the diversity of research and its direct impact on our daily lives while inspiring young minds to explore careers in science.

For the CSTO2NE project, the European Researchers’ Night was a unique opportunity to present our vision of a carbon-neutral future. Our presence at the event featured:

  • An online poster introducing the project’s core mission: transforming waste into CO₂-absorbing materials through biomimicry, mineral carbonation, and eco-design.

  • A project roll-up displayed at the event’s EU Corner, where visitors explored how the CSTO2NE project is tackling key environmental challenges.

Participants engaged with the project’s innovative strategies for:

  • Repurposing industrial waste into sustainable construction materials.

  • Using phytomining to clean polluted soils while recovering valuable minerals.

  • Developing technologies to filter microplastics from wastewater.

  • Designing low-carbon aggregates for the construction sector.

The event allowed the CSTO2NE project to go beyond technical discussions and connect directly with the public. Visitors learned about the critical role of circular economy principles in reducing carbon emissions and how research can offer scalable solutions to today’s climate challenges.

It was also an opportunity to highlight the importance of bio-inspired innovations in the fight against climate change—turning nature’s strategies into real-world applications.

One of the core goals of the European Researchers’ Night is to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators. For the CSTO2NE team, participating in this event was a chance to spark curiosity and showcase how science can drive positive environmental impact.

We believe that achieving a carbon-neutral economy is only possible through collaboration, education, and public engagement. Events like this strengthen our commitment to building sustainable futures, driven by both research and community support.

Thank you to everyone who joined us—we’re excited to keep pushing the boundaries of sustainable innovation!
